Got a great mystery comp tape the other day for a dollar, it looks like a comp of bands on the A.N.K.L.E. label, whatever that might mean. The inside has a Stirling, UK, address, and the only band I know on it is the Fakes (who had one single, "Production") which makes sense as they were from Stirling. I think I've also heard of the band Vertical Hold who are also on it, but the others are a mystery to me - 22 Beaches, FK9, Rhythm Method, and others whose names I forget at the moment. All the tracks sound like simple non-studio demos, with a slightly muddy quality. But some of the bands are great - FK9 are catchy kbd stuff, and Rhythm Method are great female vocal punk and sound sort of like a Sick Things demo. Though I've only listened to side one so far, other bands are either diy stuff or cold wave (22 Beaches sound like a cross between Above the Ruins and early Bauhaus.) This tape is a total mystery to me - anyone know anything? Any other releases exist by those bands or the label? A fanzine-label maybe? No year is listed either, but going by the Fakes who probably didn't last long, my guess is 78 or 79. The tape itself looks ancient but is in great shape. And it's real weird that an obscure tape like that would end up over here somehow.

FK9 had 2 7"ers - "Stranger At The Heart" and "Our Condition" released in 1980 and 1981 which don't seem to sell for the £10 asking price on eBay.

I'll send you a dollar for a copy of it. Never heard of any of those bands other than the Fakes. Stirling is about 45 mins drive from here. Maybe Bash would know something about it if he were here as he is quite a know-all when it comes to the Punk roots of Scottish history? [sorely missed]

errrr Jim I am here (Bash that is) I only joined a couple of weeks ago and haven't got round to re-introducing myself to the forum........'course I don't suppose the name change helped either . Anyway I don't have any info on the Fakes other than info that's available on the web, soundfile here: www.punk77.co.uk/groups/fakes.htmand they get slagged off a bit here(half down the page): www.geocities.com/punkscenes/scotland.htmlAlso check at the last link for an early pic of wattie pre-mohawk . There is a Vertical Hold 7" as well, titled 'Rubber cross'. Any chance of a copy of the tape? I've got a few $$ laying around or I can trade CDR's, that tape isn't exactly the sort of thing that turns up every day (or ever in fact!) even in Scotland.
